Western Wake Freeway broke new ground in a lot of ways for North Carolina. It is a pivotal segment of the ongoing 540 “Raleigh Loop” project that will eventually connect all of the suburbs around Raleigh together. It was also the first completely electronic toll road in North Carolina. At its construction, it was one of the few fully electronic toll roads in the US that did not in any way rely on toll booths.
We were the prime Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) and Quality Control (QC) firm for this Design-Build project. Specifically, we provided inspections for the installation of fiber optic cable, microwave vehicle detection systems, closed-circuit television cameras, and the road’s dynamic electronic message signs. All of these elements were integrated through Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) along the road corridor and connected directly to the Triangle Regional Management Center, State Emergency Operating Center, and NCTA’s Customer Service Center. The Western Wake Freeway opened to traffic in 2012.
