CDOT Electrical Safety Program
Charlotte, NC
The City of Charlotte selected our team to provide engineering services for the CDOT Electrical Safety Program. The services for this project include a comprehensive evaluation of the current CDOT practices related to traffic signal work and recommendations.
After the project kick-off meeting, we evaluated the equipment and practices of the City’s traffic signal group and existing personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements. This included overhead signal work, traffic signal cabinet work, and voltmeter testing. The completed evaluation consisted of reviewing existing safety policies and documentation, interviews with City staff members, observations of staff member operations, an inspection of existing City equipment, and a review of the PPE being worn.
Our team used their extensive contacts with traffic signal industry leaders, municipalities, equipment manufacturers, contractors, and distributors to gain additional insight into the most appropriate safety practices, PPE, and traffic signal hardware. We focused on the effects, causes, and prevention of electrical shocks and arc burns associated with traffic signals and related equipment that require Arc Flash assessments and safety lockout procedures to ensure technician safety.
