Audubon Drive Sidewalk Addition
Danville, VA
We are providing engineering design services for the addition of a sidewalk along Audubon Drive between Riverside Drive and Apollo Avenue. This project is the beginning of an effort to improve sidewalk connectivity and increase pedestrian safety along a multimodal corridor. We are providing detailed engineering design and will administer the public bid processes for the resulting construction project.
Our design reconfigures the road so that it consists of two 12’ lanes, including a curb, gutter, and sidewalk on one side. To avoid affecting the parking lot of a motorcycle shop at the intersection of Riverside Drive, a retaining wall was added to reduce impacts and serve as a gateway into this corridor. Our hydraulic engineers designed the storm drain network and modeled the proposed sidewalk in HEC-RAS for the No-rise package. Summit also noted the location of utilities to minimize relocation of power poles, gas lines, water, and sanitary sewer. Only one fire hydrant had to be moved, and a pedestrian signal will be added to move pedestrians across Riverside Drive safely.
