Project Description

Summit was the prime consultant for the 466-million-dollar Monroe Expressway connection from US 74 near I-485 in Mecklenburg County to US 74 between Wingate and Marshville in Union County. An 18-mile, completely electronic toll road, the Monroe Expressway was the largest NCDOT project in history when construction started. Now that it’s operational, the Bypass is improving the mobility and capacity of the previously congested US 74 by allowing high-speed regional travel to bypass traffic meant just for the commercial businesses in the US 74 corridor.

We provided Construction Engineering Inspection (CEI), structures inspections, materials sampling and testing, and Maintenance Management services, including GIS mapping and a database for tracking warranty items. At the project’s peak construction, we provided one Resident Engineer, three assistant Resident Engineers, and our entire team provided 34 technicians. This project’s scope also included the construction of 37 bridges and 21 box culverts. We inspected all aspects of the 7 Open Roads Tolling (ORT) facilities and gantries for toll collections to meet the aggressive schedule for roadway openings. The Monroe Expressway opened to traffic on November 27, 2018.
