Our Thanksgiving Potluck – What Your Dish Says About You

Picture of a Thanksgiving meal.

Introduction

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! At Summit, we have a lot to be grateful for this year, and our awesome employees AND amazing clients are at the top of that list.

We try our best to squeeze in any opportunity we can to eat good food and spend time with our colleagues. Most recently we had a Thanksgiving potluck at our Corporate Office. This potluck featured 30 DISHES! Even the MEGA-sized paper plates were hanging on for dear life.

As we started putting things out on tables, I watched as some people marched out their dishes in pride while others quickly threw their store-bought boxes away (and yes, we know who you are.). A few humbly hid their dishes behind others, nervous to let their dishes shine. If I’ve learned anything about attending potlucks, and particularly Thanksgiving potlucks, it’s that they are a great time show off your crock pot– and that your dish of choice says a lot about you.

I do have very strong feelings about crock pots (I have three), but this is not about them . This is about the other observation: what your Thanksgiving potluck dish of choice says about you.

Desserts

Pecan pie with whip cream.

Pecan Pie

You appreciate tradition, but you also like to put your own spin on it. After all, the quintessential dessert of Thanksgiving is pie, but that doesn’t mean we have to settle for Pumpkin every year! You know that not everyone is going to appreciate your hard work and unique approaches to life, but that’s their loss!

Pumpkin pie slice.

Pumpkin Pie

You’re a real traditionalist. You know that Thanksgiving is nothing without a pie, and a Pumpkin Pie is the strongest contender for the role. Nobody bats an eye at this addition to the table—but it would be sorely missed if nobody brought it, just as your own hard work would be missed if you weren’t there to provide much-needed support.

Picture of store-bought hand pies.

Store-Bought Pie

Your motto is probably to “work smarter, not harder.” They’re words of wisdom for a reason—recognizing our strengths is a virtue and a skill, and sometimes, we just need to know when to bring in the store-bought goods and call it a day We appreciate your contribution and thank you for not poisoning us.

Apple pie

Apple Pie

According to the internet, the apple pie has been voted the most American Pie. You are a Patriot! Also, you know when a pie is just too delicious to leave out. Apple Pies may not be as well-renowned as the Pumpkin Pie for the Thanksgiving meal, but that doesn’t mean it can’t find a place at the table!

Pig pickin' cake.

Pig Pick’n Cake

You know what you’re doing, and you do it well. In fact, you’re able to pull off feats often-unheard of by others, and your unconventional approach is widely appreciated. You also may be a little bit country… But there’s nothing wrong with that!

Corn flake crispies.

Corn Flake Crispies

You’re in Gen Z, and anyone would be lucky to see you participate. Your youthful and unorthodox approach to things introduces a much-needed change to a very traditional setting. This delightful treat is a spin on the old, faithful Rice Krispy treats that we all needed, and you are awesome bringing it to the potluck and shaking things up for the rest of us.

Next Up, the “Starters”

Cranberry and blue cheese crumble salad.

Salad

You are sensible, down to earth, and care about the well-being of others. That’s not to say you’re boring, however—the great thing about salads is the endless variations of toppings you can put on them! This classic dish is never out of fashion, just like you.

Deviled eggs.

Deviled Eggs

You thought you chose the easiest thing to make. Big mistake—you may have begun to regret your choices when you were peeling boiled eggs at 8pm the night before the potluck. Sometimes looks can be deceiving! When you commit to something, though, you always follow through, and that’s what makes you great.

Brussel sprout salad.

Brussel Sprout Salad

The Brussel Sprout has reinvented itself over the past few years and has proven itself to be great cooked (or not cooked) in a lot of different dishes. Much like the brussel sprout, you have evolved over the past few years to become something trendy and hip. Your adaptability means you can fit in just about everywhere!

Buffalo chicken dip.

Buffalo Chicken Dip

You’re a little spicy and unconventional, but people are always happy to have you around. You have some hidden sides to you, some more surprising than others. Maybe you were in a band once? Or maybe you secretly wanted to learn how to Salsa Dance? Either way, you and your food choices are bold.

Pasta salad in a dish.

Pasta Salad

Are we at a summer BBQ? Are we at a Fall Tailgate? Who knows– and who cares!– because you’ve been making this recipe for a while now, and everyone loves it. You’re a dependable and reliable person. Just because everyone can predict your contributions doesn’t mean they aren’t important—it means they’re all the more important for having been accounted for. You do the work, so others don’t have to.

Picture of pigs in a blanket.

Pigs in a Blanket

Ah, Pigs in a Blanket. These tasty treats are always a hit, no matter where they are and what time of year they crop up! Just like you, they’re a popular part of the party, and there are so many of them that it’s easy to share. You’re an outgoing and friendly type, and you love to have a good time.

Picture of cranberry sauce.

Bourbon Vanilla Cranberry Sauce

You know that alcohol is not allowed during work hours, but cooking with it is fair game. Some of your co-workers are stressed out at times, and you wanted to find the perfect way to take the edge off! You’re thoughtful and willing to think outside the box.

The Sides

Cheesy potatoes with cheese and chives.

Crock-Pot Cheesy Potatoes

These are the party potatoes, the ones that you can take to any gathering, and they just work. You may be an introvert at work, but you can’t fool us! We see your party side shining through with this dish of cheesy goodness.

Mashed potatoes with butter.

Mashed Potatoes

Such a hometown family comfort food. You love to take care of and help others (even those that can be a bit much!), and that shows in any of your home cooking. They may make you want to take a nap under your desk later, but we appreciate the sentiment.

Sweet potato casserole in a dish.

Sweet Potato Casserole

Is it dessert? Is it a main dish? We don’t know, but it’s delicious. You’re not here to steal the show, but you are very subtly plotting to take over the world.

Creamed Spinach

You appreciate balance. Having a healthy element is important, like spinach, but the more unpredictable side just had to add some cheese. You also probably talked about Paula Dean at some point during the potluck and made sure to share the recipe with others.

Baked Beans

You wanted to make sure you brought something but didn’t want it to be store-bought or from a can, so you made the baked beans in a crockpot. We know summer isn’t your favorite season, so choosing a food that is a favorite dish of those summer-lovin’ co-workers shows you care about others. That’s very HR of you!

Butterbeans with Corn

What is Thanksgiving without a dish that has the word butter in it? While we usually catch you snacking on light, healthy vegetables during the workday, you decided to take a walk on the wild side with this dish and veer off the healthy path for the good of the holiday!

Picture of collard greens.

Collard Greens

You appreciate the Southern in you and aren’t afraid to share it with others. It may not be something everyone has tried, but you are confident that everyone should. You may have even been secretly adding it to people’s plates as they moved down the table, collecting all of the Thanksgiving goodness.

Picture of corn muffins.

Corn Bread Muffins

A slight twist on a classic. You like to put your stamp on things. It’s not how Grandma would make it, but she respects your ingenuity anyway.

Corn bread stuffing.

Corn Bread Stuffing

See “Corn Bread Muffins”, but you also don’t have a muffin pan.

Picture of baked mac and cheese.

Baked Mac N Cheese

You wanted to bring a little soul to this Thanksgiving potluck, and what better way than nothing but goodness drenched in cheese and butter? You usually bring soul with your music, but today you shared it with a southern, hometown dish of cheesy goodness.

Picture of corn pudding.

Corn Pudding

You know that corn is a traditional vegetable, but you prefer the road less traveled, so you made corn into a dessert-ish casserole. The amount of sugar used doesn’t need to be discussed, but we all appreciate the twist on a traditional, borderline bland, vegetable.

Picture of fried apples.

Fried Apples

Forget being healthy, it’s Thanksgiving, and you felt that everyone needed to add some sweet goodness to the holiday potluck. Life is too boring to be filled with vegetables seasoned with salt, so bring on the fried fruits!

The Main Dishes

Cooking a turkey in a corporate office building just isn’t feasible without an oven, so our main dishes may not have been turkey, but you definitely didn’t hear any complaints!

Picture of bbq brisket.

Brisket and BBQ

You are an outdoorsy person and love the technical side of smoking meat, like calculating the perfect temperature. You can easily feed any size crowd, and the food never disappoints. The smoke and added sauce are the perfect balance on a plate.

Crock pot full of chili.

Chili

The only thing you love more than the cold weather is having a week’s worth of leftovers in your fridge. Your tupperware is all stained orange, but you have no regrets. We all want someone to look at us the way you look at your crock-pot.

That’s a Wrap!

From our family here at Summit to yours, we hope you have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!
